Snapshot: Daddy Obama

While my own dadio was having brunch with my family in the Chicago burbs (without me - man I hate long distance father's days), our man Obama was speaking on fatherhood at a Chicago church.

There is a serious problem with Obama's fatherhood speech. He cites the same misleading claims that "children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of schools and twenty times more likely to end up in prison. They are more likely to have behavioral problems, or run away from home, or become teenage parents themselves." In my book, BEYOND (STRAIGHT AND GAY) MARRIAGE, I describe the deployment of these assertions by the anti-feminist, anti-gay right wing marriage movement. I also debunk them. I hate to hear these words coming frm thing you know he'll be continuing Bush's "marriage promotion" policies (to the tune of $750 million!), and that would be dreadful.

Obama was not addressing the middle or upper classes. How well you parent in a singular sense has a lot to do with your economic status, your education level and the expectations of the extended family and community in which you raise your child. Statistics bear this out.

He seems to be about the last person you could label anti -feminist or anti-gay.

It was Father's Day. The speech was about being responsible for the children you bring into this world. A lot of people aren't. More than most of us insulated upper class folk realize.
